Book two of the Gaunt’s Ghosts series, Ghostmaker – not to be confused with the short story of the same name – this is essentially a series of short stories framed by a single loose narrative, rather than a full novel. In a lull between actions on the jungle world of Monthax, Colonel-Commissar Gaunt walks the line sharing a few words with his men, each conversation prompting a new story.

It’s arguably a bit strange, in hindsight, for the second book in the series to be a book of short stories, and also to include the first Gaunt’s Ghosts story both narratively and chronologically. That’s the nature of how the early series developed, however, and shouldn’t take away from the fact that these stories do a great job of expanding upon and developing the characters from First and Only.

The second book in the gaunts ghosts trilogy. Introduces you to a lot of characters in the first novel in detail. Enjoyed it but felt a bit disjointed at times.

3.5 / 5 stars. Entertaining read with good exposition for further books.
But far from Abnett's best work.

Serviceable collection of 40k short fiction with a pretty good wrap up.

Still awesome. The end especially made it for me.

This book felt bitty; little segments of individual character back-story told in passing while we wait for the main story event. By the time I got to the end it seemed like a 3-way fight but without some background I really didn't understand quite who was involved or what sides they were on. TBH I was counting down the pages towards the end too, glad to finish. This Warhammer stuff is quite simply not for me.
