I read this to Stella. I liked it, but I’m not sure that the subtle/unspoken aspects of the plot and characters are developed enough for kids in the target audience to pick up on them. At least my daughter didn’t pick up on them. Of course the upshot of that was that we had some good conversations.

I think the characters are the key to this story. Annabelle is good and brave but not unrealistically so. Toby is a fascinating character who reminded me of Boo Radley. Annabelle's parents were also stellar; I especially liked her mom. Finally, Betty was an interesting character, although so very rotten. This story does not have a neat happy ending, but I appreciated the themes, especially of standing up for what is good and right and true even when almost everyone else feels differently.

Wow. I read this in one sitting.

(Lots of beautiful symbolism in this book. Comparisons to TKAM are fitting. Different but would be a great companion for young readers. Loved this book....)

An important story of truth and justice in the vein of To Kill a Mockingbird and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Annabelle is a true heroine and role model. Sensitive subject matter—violence, tragedy, death. Mature readers ages eleven and up.

I enjoyed this book but not as much as the one I was reading at the same time. Maybe not the right book to be giving kids, either.

Annabelle’s life in a quiet Pennsylvania town has been affected by two world wars, but her life really changes when she meets her new classmate Betty Glengarry. Betty is a typical bully and makes it known. She specifically attacks Toby a veteran of World War I. Will Annabelle, who knows what a kind soul Toby is, be able to stand up for him or will she choke and be a bystander?

This is a 2017 Newbery Honor book.

Such a good book until the end. The author just killed off the main characters at the end. It also did not follow up on the first line about learning to lie. I wish it had another chapter to finish it. I thought it was a glitch on my kindle at the end. I wouldn’t say it is worth reading, just because of the end.

Great middle grade novel!
