This book was just that case for me - I expected an average YA/thriller. Enough to keep you entertained but only good enough to buy if it’s on sale.

Some pretty heavy issues for middle grade, but so well presented.
This is one of those books where you want no one to bother you when you are reading it, and when it’s over, you want to press it in everyone’s hands.
It is extraordinarily well-written, well-paced, and plum full of exceptional, but believable, characters.

Maria, a seventh grade teacher/colleague, organized the Island's seventh grade read, and this was their book this year, so I decided to read it--and it is EXCELLENT! The writing is remarkable, the story heart-breakingly powerful, and the historical detail convincing. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a clear, simple, powerful story. Write more ya fiction, Lauren Wolk!
