4.01 AVERAGE

A tumblr that I follow was raving about this book and posted a free eBook link so I figured I might as well. I was surprised to enjoy it as thoroughly as I did. Felt very familiar somehow, but can't place why. Tickled me that it was set in the Bay Area where I grew up. =)

Sinceramente, 10 puntos.

2.5 stars.

despite my love for the concept or angels and the supernatural, this book was just...not for me.

i strongly disliked the writing style. it was too simple and plain for my tastes. a lot of it didn't feel very fluid, and i feel like the first person, narrator-talking-to-you-like-a-friend style has been done a lot better in many, many other books.

the book also didn't feel very fleshed out for me. so few characters with barely any development, world-building that came in bites, mostly fulfilled with clunky exposition delivered in front of the main character in ways that didn't feel authentic in the slightest.

penryn is a pretty standard protagonist. i feel like i've seen her character before, and done much better. she feels like a plain jane for all the readers to use as a self insert.

i'll admit that i actually ended up liking raffe towards the end of the book. though, he really, really could have used some development beyond the brooding, blue-eyed, one-liner dispenser. i mean, at least he doesn't do anything questionable and seems to actually respect and help the female lead. that counts as character development, right?

the angel concept itself was interesting, though, as i said, it needed more development!!!!!!! there really was not enough angel action in this book, beside raffe fighting off a couple of thugs at one point. that opening action scene between raffe and the other angels? that's all the angels do in the book. yeahhhh.

i'll probably read the other books in the series, seeing as they're quite short, but idk.

Pretty darn good. I would put it up there with Hunger Games, not as good as Divergent, but pretty good! Good enough for me to freak out that the next book won't be out for a year. Why do I do this to myself?

I purchased Angelfall in one of my mass 99-cents-or-less purchases I occasionally do, then promptly forgot about it amongst all the books that had to be reviewed now. After the 5-star-review deluge of biblical proportions swept across Goodreads, I looked it up only to find that - oh - I already owned it! Score! Now, though, I am finding myself at a loss for words when trying to write the review.

I will start with the fact that Angelfall kicks the snot out of nearly every other self-published novel I have ever read. It was so well done, in fact, that I am inclined to judge Susan Ee as I would a traditionally published author - not particularly fair, but there you have it. Angelfall is also the best angel book I have read in a really, really long time. She not only holds her own in the genre, she kicks the snot out of that competition as well. However, after finishing it I was left with the feeling: "yeah, it was good, but..." I couldn't help but feel that a bit of the 5 star fervor came from the author's self-pub status and not the book itself. Don't get me wrong, it is a good book; just not, perhaps, an unanimously 5-star book.

Penryn was wonderful. She was smart, strong, and just as apt to save others as to save herself. She had her priorities, and they were good priorities, and she did what was needed to stay true to those priorities. Penryn's mother scared the crap out of me - and I loved it. I will read the next books if only to find out what happens with her and the...little surprise...we get at the end.

I like that Ee's angels don't completely fly in the face of religious convention (intentional pun), but (agreeing with Sean here) they felt a bit out of context within Ee's world; there was a dearth of any religious reference or framework.

I like that there isn't any InstaLove. I also like that Penryn doesn't loose sight of her goals after she starts being attracted to Raffe.

Basically, I find that it was a pretty good book - I just don't really have a lot to say about it. I will probably read the next one and would recommend it if asked.

I quite enjoyed this. Penryn was a strong character to follow, and I enjoyed her interactions with Zaffe. The ending was dark and creepy, in a good way.

It wasn't my favourite read because I didn't really get on board with the romance - I felt the relationship was more like brother/sister. Also, the plot got a bit thin for the middle part of the book, but it definitely picked up towards the end.

Overall, I'd rate this 3.5 stars. It was a fun, well written story, but not one that'll stick with me.
