As usual with the Dexter books, the writing is a little too cutesy for me, but I like the stories and the thriller aspects, so I keep reading them.
dark funny medium-paced

I binged these, as I knew I would be rewatching the series. The series is so much better than the books. The development of the characters and Dexter's inner thoughts.

I'd been waiting to read this book for a while, since finishing the third in the series a couple months back, then waiting for my library to have it available. (I've *tried* to stop buying books.)

I just started watching the TV series recenrly, and am currently in the middle of the 2nd season. I think overall I prefer the books though there are some parts here and there of the show that I like over the books.

After seeing how much the show was veering off the storyline in the books, I was really looking forward to this one, to see where the author would take Dexter next.

The book was somewhat of a disappointment. It was similar, in some respects, to the first one, where there was a lot of buildup but the ending sort of happened all at once. And things just happened so conveniently, though I guess it couldn't have happened any other way. I will say that overall I prefer the Dexter of the books than the Dexter of the TV show. I like the fact that he appears much less human in the books. I think that's really what makes the character. I also like the concept of the Dark Passenger, which doesn't really make an appearance in the show. It didn't make much of an appearance in this book either, which was another reason for disappointment.

I'm wondering if there will be another book in the series, and I'm assuming there will be, especially after the ending.

The Dexter series has become a “cozy” read for me and this was no exception. Very enjoyable with all the dark humor and Dexter’s murderous thoughts, although this one did drag a bit in the middle (specifically the trip to Cuba) and I missed Deborah’s usual wit and banter in this book. A great read to start 2025 with!

This book fell a little flat for me. I didn't enjoy the story, it didn't pull me in. It just wasn't exciting in any way. Lots of repetition and dumb behaving Dexter.

As I've mentioned earlier, this one got off on the right track straight away after the awful path of "Dexter in the Dark", which is good. However, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the 2nd, Dearly Devoted Dexter-and that could just be that I'm reading them all too close together and getting a bit of a burn out, or noticing the same patterns of the author too much, etc.. Or, it could be that that book really was just better for me.

The cool points about this one: it was about art! The killer Dex is looking for fancies himself an original artist, and uses dead bodies in his pieces, etc.. Also, at the beginning of the book, Dexter is in Paris for his honeymoon and he goes to a very cool sounding art exhibit/performance. So all of that was really cool, and I liked the visuals for the crimes, etc.. I just think the plot might have been a little weak and jumpy in an attempt to "surprise the reader".

And a comment for anyone who has read/is reading these: When *is* he going to start taking his job of teaching Astor and Cody a little more seriously? Sheesh, get with the program, buddy, you promised them.

I really struggled to get thru this one, but the next one looks really interesting.

I feel a bit sorry for this author as the television series storylines are better, and more compelling than his books are now. Not to mention tht the characters don't match up with the series, though he gives it a good try. I'm reluctant to keep going with this series, but as I already have a copy of the next one, I'm going to have to...

I love reading the Dexter series!
