Every story in this collection makes you feel like you've gotten the shit kicked out of you after you finish it. Slight elements of surrealism add an inevitability to the stories that actually grounds them; the surrealism also visualizes and highlights the anxieties of the Korean-American experience so gorgeously.

I love Gina Chung's writing and this collection was so beautiful. I will be returning to these stories for their emotional beats and interesting cast of characters. It's often hard for me to finish a short story collection, but this one had strong story after strong story keeping me engaged and wanting to read more.
really enjoyed this collection! each story is so unique; they felt fully fleshed out and captivating despite being short!

This is actually the first short story collection i remember reading as i always thought i couldnt get into a story with less than 100 pages since my enjoyment of a book often comes to the attachment i feel towards the characters i read so it truly took me by surprise how much i loved this collection. somwhow i started getting attached to the author's writing and the emotions portrayed idk it just really worked for me
my favorite stories were Presence and Human hearts (the latter was so good i hope the author will write more supernatural/ myths and folklore inspired stories)
