I'm not sure if it's just me but I gave this book the old 'college effort' and I couldn't even get myself through more than a chapter or two. I can't even remember, maybe I read three. Whatever, you may find you love it but I couldn't stand it. Too many awesome awesome books in this world to read/finish bad ones!

a frustratingly funny rendering of masculinity in all its violence, impotence, and internal contradiction

Either it was very uninteresting or you needed to work harder than I was willing to to pay any attention at all to what was happening.

2nd time through and this little, odd book holds up better than the first. Upgrading to five stars. He writes the way I wish I could: very strange and very funny. In other hands, the intricacies of a narrative involving ninety-nine brothers (Where is George?) would have devolved into a collapsed Jenga tower. But Antrim capably weaves the story and handles his characters so deftly, the mechanics of the endeavor are never considered. Instead, we are left alone to enjoy the comedy of a dinner party gone awry.

I read this book awhile ago. A group of one hundred brothers meet in an expansive personal library for a meeting regarding their father's will. The somewhat ridiculous set up quickly becomes increasingly bizarre and dystopian. The book is from the perspective of only one brother, and the themes of family, identity, and I guess home/library renovation melt and blend and come to an unexpected and sudden conclusion. Highly recommended.
