I have a mixed response because I absolutely LOVED the format of the narrative, how we’re experiencing this story as instructions delivered in second-person by a seasoned home-invading master to their up-and-coming protégé… Very unique and compelling. I was deeply absorbed throughout all the preparatory processes - scoping out the house, spying on the residents, etc - but once the main invasion began, things gradually got muddier and muddier. Certain transitions made no sense, like in one scene a character is unconscious and then in the next he’s abruptly running through the house? Something happens to another character’s tongue but he’s still talking just fine?? Also the book is riddled with typos, it’s… frankly baffling. Like surely it must have passed under more than ONE pair of eyes before hitting the press, right? But anyway, in sum, even though I only liked about half of it, I REEEEAALLY liked that half.

Spooky season, pt. 1:

This book was amazing in the first half but fell apart once the action really started. I preferred the quiet evil that lurked in the darkness.

Ratings for 2023:
1 Star: DNF and will be a hater.
2 Stars: Finished but I was annoyed.
3 Stars: It was good!
4 Stars: Loved it — you should check it out.
5 Stars: Amazing! Read this book!

This was such a unique read that really played to my taste in horror. If you liked the 2008 movie The Strangers, I would recommend this to you!

Told in second person POV, this book takes you through the planning and execution of a home invasion. There is s tad bit of suspension of disbelief required which is part of the reason I leaned more towards 4 stars. There is a camera/recording aspect that just didn't fully work for me because of the suspension of disbelief required. But I did enjoy the commentary this opened up for crime and crime media. Additionally, I almost wish the second person narration had read more script like, rather than someone feeing instructions and directly involved in the home invasion. I think had this read like a play script on how to preform a home invasion, this would have been five stars for me.

But despite my qualms, I did really enjoy this because of the unique idea and execution. Highly recommend this if you are looking for something different than the run of the mill horror. Plus, its an indie release!
