Dolled up YA fiction that meanders a bit before a strong final 70 pages, upon which it crash lands into a lame non-ending that fails to even setup a sequel properly
Points for well written action and world building, but not much else to recommend.

You should read this.
Adult fiction.
Post America, Corporate fascism dystopia.
Not a clone of all the other books out there.
Slower start than I would have liked, but not a slow start. Kept packing punches til the end.

Graphic: Child abuse, Child death, Death, Gun violence, Suicidal thoughts, Blood, Police brutality, Grief, Death of parent, Murder, Fire/Fire injury, Gaslighting, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Acephobia/Arophobia
Firebreak is your standard "girl is good at thing in dystopia, feels unexplained connection to boy, gets famous and becomes revolution figurehead" story
There are some cool worldbuilding details (the dystopia has two corporations locked in a forever war; they've made child soldiers into mascots that you can play with in basically Fake Fortnite)
But they don't really come together? Like, why is one of the main career options for an orphan in poverty struggling to earn enough credits to drink water "video game streamer"?
And the connection with the robo child soldier is just as bland and insta-lovey as any YA romance, except the protagonist feels an inexplicable friendship connection rather than romantic
There isn't even a climactic childhood friend reveal even though all the ingredients are there........... bland
Protag is acearo but doesn't talk about it at all. You kind of need to rely on author's word for that

Captures the distinctive feel of early 2010s dystopian sci-fi with surprisingly strong parallels to Cyberpunk-esque corporate wars. Plot is very linear and the world building is vague, leaving room for further works, but the core concept is well developed.
