I want to like this poet every time I pick up her books but although I enjoy her phrasing and connection to the physical world and to Canadian geography I find the poems as a whole just slip by not really stopping to impact me

For a poet to use both Darth Vader and Lady Macbeth in a single volume of poetry is impressive. Di Brandt is hyperfocused on climate change, and with this book being published in 2008, it's a little sad that it's so relatable. Between literary and film references, Brandt also relies one racers to have an understanding of biblical and mythical references as well. Her use of repetition is sparing and poignant where it does appear. Her short lines counteract the longer ones nicely and in a way this is refresheding to a reader. The connecting parts of poems that go on for many pages are intruiging, and sometimes they're hard to digest. Overall, this was a beautiful collection of poems.
