Hannibal Rising is a prequel novel to the Lecter series that details the youth and young adult life of Hannibal Lecter as he grows from a child to a monster. The book isn't entirely bad, but it is slow and feels unnecessary. This backstory gives a perfectly sane and simple reason Hannibal became a cannibal (and not just because it rhymes) which makes his character less interesting. Harris seems to be obsessed with humanizing Hannibal and giving him reasons for why he became the person he became. To an extent that's fine, but it makes his character far less interesting. Hannibal was much better as a mysterious psychopath.

Very different compared to the other Hannibal books and not in a good way.

I don't think I'll finish this book, since people have been saying it's just a slasher book. I thought maybe I'll read it to see how Hannibal became what he did, but I don't want to.

I agree with the others saying that this book is kinda anticlimactic and doe'snt really have that much............... Depth? I guess, it was quite a disappointment considering this is the last book of the series and just feels like a cash grab.

cw// child grooming

don’t get me wrong — this book IS worth reading. it’s a welcomed insight into hannibal’s trauma & it builds a solid backstory. it makes it all make sense. it broke my heart! i love him (nbc hannibal) so so so so much ok

but what the fuck is wrong with thomas harris. he wrote an entire child grooming romance with lady murasaki. AND it doesn’t read at all as “he was groomed by the woman who took him in as a traumatized mute child, which messed up his mental state even more!”
it read as “and then he kissed his sexy aunt”

I really enjoyed this storyline and getting to understand what made Hannibal into what he is. However the book was so long, with scenes that I felt were not needed. It was great to see in detail how his personality and tastes formed especially his unwavering loyalty. Also to see how easily the world can turn you into a monster if you refuse to bend to it's will.
