This is yet another book that was very popular when it first came out and got a lot of attention. I read a little bit of it before, but didn't get a chance to finish. Seeing that it was available in my library, I picked it up so I could see how the story ended.

First I want to talk about the good parts. This book is very well-written, and the suspension of disbelief has to be very strong in order to accept that the narrator is a dog. He is very articulate and philosophical, understanding human concepts sometimes better than the people around him. He is also extremely intelligent. Now, I won't deny that animals in general have a certain intellect and dogs are smart in their way, but Enzo is too smart to be believed.

However, as I said the book is well-written and it follows Denny's life through a number of circumstances. Sometimes happy, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes frustrating. Some parts were more frustrating than others. And I have to say, the way they turned around was a little too easy. I don't want to sound jaded and cynical, but I guess I was thinking a little more trouble would come. While it's good Denny took the high road, it was still strange to have everything fall into his lap.

As for the ending, I can see how it might be uplifting and hopeful but I almost think it would've been better to end after Enzo's death. But I'm still glad I read it.

I started this book three times. Although there are some sweet moments, it just fell flat for me. It was okay. The idea is interesting, but the characterization is too limited, too generalized. This was a book club selection, but it is not compelling enough to encourage me to read more by this author.
