Really enjoyed this book...not your typical dog story...

Not sure how this book got such a high rating. I thought this would be a nice, sweet little read from a dog's perspective, but it was something else entirely.

The whole racing being a metaphor for life didn't really work for me. There were literal chapters trying to make the comparison, and it just fell flat and reallllllyyy made me lose interest. I honestly feel the book would have been significantly better without the author trying to make this forced comparison.

I really liked the idea of the story being told from a dog's perspective, but i feel like there were a lot of liberties taken for what the dog would have known and been actually able to relay to the reader. I feel like it made for lazy writing and story telling. The characters all felt very one note and I didn't feel like we were made to care about any of them. I know this was meant to be a "wrap everything up in a nice bow" type of book, but the ending really didn't feel satisfying and again, just gave off lazy writing.

Clearly there's a lot of people out there who actually enjoyed this one, but it definitely wasn't the book for me.

4⭐️ I was not emotionally equipped enough to handle this book lol if you’re a dog person, I highly recommend! Lots of REALLY heavy subject matter, though

This is a book I needed to read at this point in my life, but I feel that you would feel that same feeling at any time you read the book. It has that transcendent message that fits in to any emotional/psychological condition of the reader.

I was surprised on how the simple story resonated, without encumbering subplots and twists. It went for the path of least resistance to the reader’s emotions. The perspective of the narrator added to the simplicity of the story and made me want to pay more attention to my dog and think how he would see the way I am living my life. It's like a way to perform self feedback on your actions and attitudes in your daily life.

This book will stay by my bedside and one that I will reach for often.

Yeah it made me cry.

Narrator (the dog) has no sense of humor but makes laugh-out-loud comments.
