Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde is masterful little horror, detective novel. As Stephen King claims in Danse Macabre, the book is a masterclass in concision and tension. I especially enjoyed the Norton Critical Edition, which supplements this slim book with critical essays, commentary from Stevenson's lifetime, photographs, and some analysis of film and stage adaptations.

This is one of those classics that has actually been pretty negatively impacted by its cultural significance when it comes to modern readings of it (in my opinion). The mystery element of this book was no doubt extremely shocking for readers at the time. but reading it now, we know what’s going on before it’s actually revealed in the story. I do think that the writing was captivating and there were some really interesting comments about the nature of evil and the duality of humanity, which is, again, to be expected. As for what this book is or is potentially trying to say about certain mental health disorders, I truly don’t feel that the author even had that on his radar when writing this, but it is an interesting point to consider as modern readers. I’m not sure that this book is necessarily a classic that I will readily recommend, but I don’t regret reading it.
