It took me a while to get past the third person writing style, but once I did I really enjoyed the book. It was fast paced and interesting and I feel like there’s enough room left for a sequel maybe.

Wow. Just wow. This book was romance, magic, mystery, suspense, nostalgia, and creativity all rolled into one. I was rooting for the main character the whole time, and just when I thought the author couldn’t give me another surprise, there was one right there, ready to shock me. I thought the ending needed to be changed…until I realized the main character was whole in herself and didn’t need a guy to be fulfilled. While I would’ve appreciated Holland to be with someone, I can understand why Stephanie Garber concluded her protagonist’s story the way she did, ensuring that Alchemy of Secrets ended with a strong female character, independent of a man. That wasn’t the main purpose of this story, anyway.

Okay. So. I love this author for YA but felt like this book was a huge miss. The ending was very anti climactic. The character building was shallow. The plot holes were so huge. Who is the devil? What was Adam’s deal? Why did everyone else want the alchemical heart? Hello?! Gabe?! Did he kill his wife? Did he not? Did he have feelings for holland? What made him actually dangerous? What did the professor actually want? I don’t know. There was just so much unanswered. Why did her sister lie to her about everything? What is her job at the apparently evil but also apparently not evil bank? So many questions and contradictions.

Stephanie Garber’s first adult book and I devoured it in one sitting. It did give me the type of vibes that I first felt when I read Carival. I felt like I the voice of the main character was still more on the younger side and it still reminded me of YA at times. But I didn’t mind it at all. Still filled with magic and the twists that you expect. I couldn’t put it down!  I really am curious to see what she does next as I hear this is going to be a series.
Thank you to Flatiron for the complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
