What the heck. One of the best books I’ve read in a while—both from the complexities, characters, plots and it’s also an enjoyable read. I think it’s hard to strike this balance, sometimes the most complex and *good* stories aren’t as enjoyable to read and vice versa. But wow. Love this one. SO MUCH. Will be looking at the author’s other books. The only thing missing from this book… is a map

The first 30% of this book felt very atmospheric and heartfelt. Working through Kaikeyi’s feelings about her powers and her mother leaving felt authentic and meaningful. Her relationships with her brothers, husband, sons, and sister-wives were a delight to read.
I felt like I was waiting for a plot that never happened. And the more the story progressed, the more the narrative set up certain characters as the “good guys” and others as the “bad guys”. Retelling an are supposed to add nuance and depth to an otherwise black-and-white original. The book completely absolves Kaikeyi of any wrongdoing and neglects to flesh out any other female characters. It discredits the complexity of womanhood and their roles in stories. It’s more anti-feminist than anything.
I am not familiar with the Ramayana, but based on synopsis’ of the original text and reviews by Hindu readers, this retelling has issues with accurately portraying Hindu culture and myth.
