I enjoyed the book overall, although there were definitely some chapters I found much more interesting than others.

This book was a perfect pre-bed read for me. Interesting enough that I wanted to keep picking it up (because I find language endlessly interesting, and because while each chapter is ostensibly about a particular language, the author also uses a chapter to tell a story of linguistic features and how history and culture influence how we think about language and how languages develop), but not so interesting that I stayed up too late reading it.

I don't think I'd call it a slow-paced book but it took me a while to read it, I don't think it always engaged me as much as I'd hoped. I think I may have wanted more technical detail about each language.
