All the stories here are tight little character portraits. They're sad, dark, complicated and interesting. I mostly enjoyed my time reading them.

An overall great short-stories collection with some profound thinking embossed between the lines—an absolute joy to read through, with one exception.

"The Childhood of a Leader" felt like an intentional mess of a tale, with hard to read style, with single paragraphs that span pages at a time. It would've been okay by itself, but it followed "Intimacy" (that felt like reading through an anxiety attack), making reading a lot more tedious.

That being said, "The Wall", "The Room", and "Erostratus" were absolutely fantastic.

“I tell myself there will be nothing afterwards. But I don't understand what it means. Sometimes I almost can.... and then it fades away and I start thinking about the pains again, bullets, explosions. I'm a materialist, I swear it to you; I'm not going crazy. But something's the matter. I see my corpse; that's not hard but I'm the one who sees it, with my eyes. I've got to think... think that I won't see anything anymore and the world will go on for the others. We aren't made to think that, Pablo. Believe me: I've already stayed up a whole night waiting for something. But this isn't the same: this will creep up behind us, Pablo, and we won't be able to prepare for it."

"Shut up.”
