My essay that includes this book. http://www.themillions.com/2017/03/role-god-religion-vs-reproductive-rights.html

The Greek chorus of mothers that watch over, care and tsk-tsk about the goings on in their church and community make for an engaging and heartbreaking story of family bonds and betrayals and their far-reaching affects.

I really enjoyed this book. It was so cool that it takes place in Oceanside and that there are so many familiar places in it. However, beyond that it was really such a beautiful and complex story. So good. Highly recommend.

I'm torn between 2 or 3 stars, but decided to go with 3 for the time being given that my reading experience with this book was quite good; it grabbed my attention and I found myself curious as to what would come next. Some things, though, bothered me whilst reading. Firstly, I could not empathise enough with the characters to understand why an abortion, safely made at 17, would cause so much problem even years later. And by that I mean the constant daydreaming about their unborn child. Maybe that's bc I'm not a mother myself and don't wish to be, or bc I have never had an abortion. Ultimately, I'm not sure. In general, it was hard to connect with the main characters - except for Aubrey - and their actions later on the novel didn't help either. So yeah, something between 2 or 3 stars.
