A messy, emotional story about grief, betrayal and love. I liked Bennet's style of writing, it flowed nicely and the characters felt real. It did start to annoy me that the characters were becoming quite predictable in their mistakes and bad decisions, especially towards the end. But in a way that's because I had got to know them so well I knew exactly how they would react. The book touches on hard topics such as suicide and r*pe, which I thought would be explored more deeply. But most of all its just a backdrop to the story, and its not something that the characters ever get to properly deal with or get closure from. Which is a very realistic way to depict it. This book raises more questions than it answers. It's very "slice of life" so if you like that then it'll be a great one for you.

Good written, but I feel like some of it was just drama for drama sake. Obviously, this is such a great representation of black stories, but besides that, what was the message, what was it for? It talks a lot about the emotional consequences of a choice, but it never mentions the good that that choice brought. Deep issues are viewed through religion, only. I loved how this showed that church leaders are humans as well, that there's hypocrisy and little understanding and empathy towards their own flock. However, where is the empathy to the characters? We see their deepest, most intimate thoughts and struggles, and us as the readers are left with the choice how to feel and think about them, and I have to admit, that's amazing, but. I think the main message is still not in favor of the characters choices. This gives you the facts and their sadness, while anything good that happened is not even a mentioned fact.
Also we never find out what happened to Nadia's mother, or why it happened. I guess we're left with the same confusion her daughter was left with for the rest of her life.
There are good things,  so many good things about this book, but given how serious things are getting in the real world, this book could easily be used against anyone seeking a choice.
