this story was kinda bland and unoriginal. I don't get why Penn was so cruel to Rhya in the beginning if he knew right away that she was a Remnant and someone he was searching for in order to save the world/fulfill the prophecy, but then completely switched up later and became very overprotective of her. The whole "i love you but i have to maintain control of my emotions and powers so i can't show you i love you" trope is really annoying (and reminds me of Xaden & Violet in Fourth Wing). After the entire push and pull, we don't get much development in their relationship until the very end when they almost hook up (but still no clear resolution over the emotion dilemma). Rhya is also annoying as the FL because her first instinct whenever she faces any kind of confrontation or difficult situation is to run away, and then Penn has to chase her down. I'm disappointed that throughout the entire book, we conclude with still no clear understanding or explanation of what the blight is, why the earth and air kingdom fell so quickly, and what sparked and fuels the conflict between the humans and faes. I can see that the author is probably setting up a love triangle/alternative romantic plot between Rhya and Soren, so I am still intrigued enough to read the sequel when it comes out to see how that develops and hopefully get more worldbuilding. Because the writing style is decent and still engaging to read, I think this is just an average, but not great, romantasy book.
