I like it though I have some minor issues with it.

For example, how does the whole story ignore that Penn
dragged her by the hair
at the beginning. I just don’t understand how that was necessary at all. Or even remotely attractive.
Saving her life or not,
she should’ve shanked him or something once she got her strength up.

What I do love is how Rhya makes wonderful friendships based on kindness and trust.

THE WIND WEAVER - JULIE JOHNSON

This was the very first Fairyloot edition I've ever received, so it was the first I grabbed when I had a gap between ARC reads. I really enjoyed the worldbuilding in The Wind Weaver, where the characters journey through many different locations and the history feels complex and rich with hidden prophecies and secrets.

One of the main criticisms of this book is that it closely parallels ACOTAR. I did see this too, although I do think this book has its own unique twist, especially in its elemental magic and final prophecy. And, although there are strong hints about who the FMC lands up with (yes, there's definitely going to be a love triangle), I'm hoping that the second book throws something unexpected our way.

I struggled to connect with either the FMC or the two MMCs, and instead really enjoyed the side characters, who bring the humour and camaraderie in this book.

That said, this is a strong romantasy book, with slow burn and a touch of spice, as well as a strong FMC who overcomes her self-doubt. It ticks a lot of boxes, with battles and some court intrigue too, and I will read the second book as I have high hopes for where the story could lead.

Review score: 3.5/5

TWs: violence, injury detail, d*ath, childbirth, s*xual content

I feel the pacing of this book needed work. the beginning 250 pages were excellent the last 100 pages also excellent, but there were 200 pages in the middle that were frustratingly repetitive and pointless.

Lots of messy feelings, miscommunications, and long stretches of nothing important happening. It didn't help that I greatly dislike the MMC. I feel that FMC would be much better off with the MMC's rival.

This being said, the book is very well written and avoided most of the annoying habits of Romantasy... ex. there was almost no modern slang (except for curse words), it wasn't overly sexual, there was no insta-love, and it did more showing than telling.

The author handled the narration beautifully. The FMC's POV is very limited by her own feelings and emotions and forces the reader to guess what is really going on. The MMC is heavily flawed (unlike other books I've read where red flag behavior is toted as loveable by the FMC, the FMC in this story is just as pissed off at and hurt by the MMC as the reader is.)

While the story isn't original at all (very predictable so far) I was entertained. I would like to see where this story goes and will likely read the next one.

I think I went into this book with the wrong expectations after everyone was really hyping it up and it was just *okay* for me. The characters felt distant to me, and there were a lot of times that, because we were in our FMC's head, and she was confused, I as the reader, was also confused. Then there was a big info dump, so the pacing just felt off throughout the book. There would be parts of the book that I was obsessed with, but then other times when I needed it to move along.
