This was a decent read, but also a bit meh. I really enjoyed this author's works from a decade ago, so I was excited to see what she had to offer in a slightly different genre. I can't say it entirely worked for me. It had a lot of similarities to other romantasy reads, most notably ACOTAR 1. This genre isn't truly all that varied, so that's no crime in and of itself, however, this book didn't really outshine in any aspect nor brought anything new to the genre for me. I struggled to find any chemistry between Rhya and Pen, and neither are especially easy characters to get behind. I find myself loving the support characters best and the dynamics they brought to the table. I especially enjoyed Soren, but I didn't like the subtle hints for a potential love triangle - that is just not my trope. The plot was a bit predictable and the set-ups for the series arcs were interesting, but not the most original to create much intrigue for me. Ultimately, everything was just okay. Nothing was terrible; there were some good and some bad and some just fine bits. I probably won't continue on with the series as it stands now.

If I had never read ACOTAR, I would’ve liked this book a lot more. However, I have read that series, which meant a lot of this book felt reused. There are some fresh concepts, but kind of feels like we know exactly where this is heading. For about the last 30%, I was just grinding my teeth trying to make it through. I will say, it is a pretty quick read even though it’s a lot of pages. (I’m with some other reviewers, there was a lot of the “why don’t you trust me?” “Why would I trust you?”)
I should’ve known this would be ACOTAR-coded when I first read that there’s a land called Prydian. But I thought, maybe that’s just a coincidence.
