this book was nothing like what i expected. i feel like this book is marketed as a queer romance, especially since the cover includes the endgame love interest in the foreground, with the main character in the background. Also because the plot summary revolves around Elsie and her crush, and how that conflicts with her best friend slotting herself back into her life. yet those are all seemingly subplots. really, this story revolves around Elsie and her experiences with queerness, especially as it has to do with her family and her peers growing up. i understood that message from a few chapters in, because this novel is not trying to be something it’s not. once you put the expectation for romance in the background the heartfelt story really comes to light. though if you’re in the mood for a romance don’t read this book, the book is filled with love, and Elsie and Joan felt like a realistically cute couple, with a story that makes sense. if you’re a fan of heartstopper this book is one hundred percent for you.

They could have just removed the whole Becca and Theresa story. It felt very unnecessary, in my opinion. They should have replaced it with more focus on Elsie's relationship with Ada and how Joan is affecting it. That would make more sense to me. I just wish there were more conflicts for Elsie between Ada and Joan.
