This really is the template. Wish I had read this as a youth, but I would have been made all the more obnoxious. I’ve read she wrote this to be adult fantasy but only succeeded selling it for kids and, while I’m happy this made it into the hands of so many future trans men, but it IS certainly one adult fantasy book, not a 4-book young adult/middle grade series.

2.5 stars = liked it; enjoyable and fun; thought provoking in some regards, but forgettable.
Good book for those looking for a light fantasy read. I enjoyed what I read, but the whole time I kept wanting more...more of Alanna's inner dialogue and more personality to the cast of characters she encounters. Some (i.e. Myles and George) are great, others I could hardly tell apart. It felt like a lot happened but also nothing happened.
Also, for a book about defying social norms, it is oddly in favor of keeping the status quo. I'm not sure if future books tackle this, but I'm not interested in finding out.

Re-reading (aka listening) this series and falling in love all over again.
To the audio specifically, I think it is very nice. There is a little hokey music at the very beginning and end of each audio book, but the narration is honest and pleasant.

The writing is okay. It’s written for younger readers (meaning the vocabulary is not exceedingly complex) but is in no way patronizing, which I really appreciate! As someone once said, “there are good books that are only for adults but there are no good books that are only for children”.

The story is rather straightforward, but nonetheless enjoyable!
