I decided after finishing Mastiff by Ms Pierce that I needed to revisit this series. If you are a fan then you understand that the Tortall series all intersect with each other. So I was left nostalgic and decided to start all over again. So, because I did not have the books on my Nook I have started buying them for it. I cannot tell you how many times I have bought these books. I read them and then pass them on. I bought my children their own copies for their libraries. I guess you could say I am an ultimate fan. These characters are like old friends to me and yes I know what is going to happen but every time my heart beat still speeds up in the dramatic parts. There are very few books or authors I will read over and over again. They are all of the Tortall books by Tamora Pierce, Anne Of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, and The Hobbit by JRR Tolkein. So shoot me, these are mt go to books. Yes, there are other must read authors but none that I will reread over and over. I was in the hospital in 2007 for 5 months and one week I was lonely and bedridden most of the time what I wanted was my friends. All of Ms Pierce books, both universes but only after I finished reading all about my friends from Tortall. But I digress and I intend to review this wonderful story.
This is the story of Alanna who with her twin brother Thom are both being sent off by their father to be educated. But, mainly to be sent away by their father a widower who has never gotten over the death if his wife enough to care for his children. Alanna is to be sent to a convent to become the perfect little lady, and Thom is to be sent to be a knight. Alanna has no desire to be a lady and dreams of being a knight and having great adventures, Thom has no desire to be a knight he wants to be a sorcerer. So they decided to trade places. Alanna will go to the castle to become a knight and Thom will go to the convent so that he can become a sorcerer. The only problem is that girls cannot becomes knights, so Alanna is going to pretend to be Alan twin to Thom. And so begins her adventure.
This is a great story of good versus bad and honor. Do I recommend it? What do you think? Yes, read this book. No it is not an adults book and doesn't have the adult drama but it doesn't need it. It has a story that you can follow and characters that you can love. Thank you Ms Pierce for bringing me such pleasure. Thank you for creating these wonderful characters and I would love to see at least a book devoted to George Cooper. And for those of you that haven't read the books and don't know George then read the books. :)
This is a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful book. I realize that it was written for teens and I am way past my teens but I love this book and all of the others that accompany it.
Alanna is such a strong character, and quite likable. I feel so bad for her familial relationship but she doesn't feel sorry for herself. Rather than cry about what she cannot do she works hard to achieve what she needs to.
Read this book, read this series, and most of all read this author.

This was more fun than I expected! A very digestible read with funny banter and a plot line that moves quickly and believably. Characters have depth without having a bunch of trauma and the adventures are varied and fun. I would definitely read more of these!
