Another entertaining mystery. In this book, Kinsey gets hired to dig up info on a cold case. But as she starts, things get heated pretty quickly.
I've always liked the TV series "Cold Cases", where the police try to find out the outcome of crimes committed many years ago.
This book depicts such a case. Detective Kinsey Millhone is convinced to "dig up" the case of Violet Sullivan, who has disappeared without a trace. A woman well known in her village, Serena Station, for her behavior, attitudes and reputation. Her passing generated both love and hate among the people in her community. Was she killed or did she just decided to run away from the life she had?
Violet is really an intriguing and even addictive person, as she is described by her acquaintances, and for me also a bit bipolar. No one can never quite know what would happen in her presence.
Kinsey, on the other hand, is not a standout character, she is boring and a little slow in her conclusions. Detectives often have a backstory for us to connect with, but hers in this book is pretty poor. Maybe is purposeful, so that our attention is focused on ALL the other characters that are presented to us. There are so many that, with the change between past and present, despite having interesting stories, everything starts to get confusing and sometimes difficult to follow.
If you like crime stories full of action this is not the book for you, as it is very much based on testimonials, memories and following tiny clues. And the end was not enlightening at all, I was waiting for some more explanation in the epilogue, but no luck...

Reread this after 11 years. This might be my favorite in the series! I'm a suckered for nostalgia and this book cuts back and forth from 1953 to 1986 (or whatever year Kinsey is living in) on a cold case of a missing mother/wife. The missing woman was a bit scandalous and this town is a Payton Place of secrets. Really enjoyed a 2nd time around.
