I really liked the storyline and the changing between past and present and between different characters.
I felt the author really fleshed out all the different characters in this book.

I particularly like way Grafton gives us the perspectives of all the players in the past as well as Kinsey's in the present.
2.5/5
A decent enough mystery, but not one of my more favorite ones. I know these books are very popular, but for some reason, I couldn't warm up to the detective or the story that much.

Private investigator Kinsey Milhone is hired to find a woman who has been missing for 34 years. The client is the missing woman's daughter who was a small child when her mother disappeared. All of Sue Grafton's alphabet series feature Kinsey Milhone, a former police officer in her 30s who lives in the fictional Santa Teresa, California. Santa Teresa is based on Santa Barbara. In this story the events take place in several made up small towns and the real city of Santa Maria. I find these stories particularly fascinating since I have a number of connections with that part of California. Since this book is a mystery I will stop here. Does Kinsey find the missing woman? Is she still alive? Those questions may be answered.
I liked this Kinsey Millhone book, I've been reading the series and this one had a really good selection of murders to choose from, an interesting plot and Kinsey caught on to all the right hints. (I hate it when you are reading along and the character blindly ignores the obvious clues!)I'd say this is one of the best books in the series, although the ending where Daisy is re-evaluating her life was a bit much.
This was a really good one. I enjoyed the mystery so much - didn't figure that one out - and I liked her slight change on style too. I have had to skip a few letters in the series as I haven't come across them. But in this one it's not just a case of following Kinsey. There are also flashbacks from different characters perspectives at the time of the crime.
You can almost forget how old these books are until they start mentioning years and how old people are, and you notice the lack of technology. There are no mobile phones and Internet here, Kinsey has to do real detective work.
She is hired by Daisy, a 40 something mess up who wants to know what happened to her mother. Back in the 50s, young mother Violet seemingly just drove out of her daughters life and never looked back. Did she abandon her daughter, or is there skullduggery afoot? Seems like a lot of people in the little town had axes to grind.

After 35 years it seems that there is little new to be found in a missing persons case, until a lucky break uncovers what happened, putting Kinsey at risk in the present day.
My final book for 2016, I liked this one better than the recent ones I've read. It was meatier, and I was having a hard time putting it down. Toward the end, though, I was finding myself thinking, finish this already!
