Edit to add:
Because I don’t want to be lumped into the group of women who apparently love mlm but don’t tolerate wlw I want to clarify that the only aspect of the book I didn’t like was the fantasy. It reminded me of a book about a magical telephone or something? I am always looking for Sapphic reads and was not disappointed in that area.
Original review: I’m definitely punishing this book for not being what I wanted. I didn’t want an unbelievable romcom with a fantasy aspect. I wanted red white and royal blue with girls. I never bothered to read any kind of summary for the book because I knew I was going to read it no matter what, but the moment I realized something was off about Jane I said out loud to no one “dammit is this a magical book”. There’s nothing wrong with weaving fantasy in a contemporary book but I just wasn’t a fan. I liked Jane and August as characters, I loved all their friends even more. Ultimately I rolled my eyes too many times during this book to rate it any higher.

(Somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars) This was absolutely not what I was expecting - and that's on me for not reading the description or a single review before starting this book. Oddly enough, I think it was the sci-fi elements that didn't quite do it for me? I'm not entirely what it was about the book that is giving me reservations, because it was a well written story with a loveable band of characters and a beautiful romance. I think it maybe lacked a bit of the heart that Red White & Royal Blue has? Or maybe I'm just a sucker for enemies to lovers and not so much insta love. I really don't know...if I figure it out, I'll tell you!

This book absolutely fucking wrecked me. Help, I'm very queer and have a lot of feelings.

I just wanna say: Good god it is so nice to read a good lesbian love story. As a lesbian myself its so hard to relate to straight people love stories tbh

What an enjoyable little surprise. McQuiston has written a mash-up of genres -- a romance novel, a coming of age story, a fantasy with a touch of science fiction, a family saga, a mystery, and an LGBTQ sapphic tale -- that also manages to be a bit of a revelatory queer history page-turner. McQuiston has gifted us with August who finds Jane riding the Q train and both characters are delightful. Good stuff.
