It is always a bit difficult reading a novel from this era: mid to late 1800’s to early 1900’s. The social mores are almost beyond understanding in this day and age. Every innuendo is exaggerated and it seems that mountains are made out of molehills. “Gasp, the woman has spoken to the man without a chaperone.” Nevertheless, many novels are from such a worldview, e.g. Jane Austen.
The story is a bit predictable but retains the reader’s interest, if only to find out how deep hatred and bitterness can run. The book deals with love, hate, bitterness, manipulation, hope, forgiveness, and determination.
If you enjoy novels from this era dealing with family dynamics and British social stratification then you might possibly enjoy this one.
