I have a hard time connecting with the removed tone and the old world, stuffy/formal feeling of the writing. It has the formal spirit of 1900 England. The story is interesting but the world is complex and at times confusing. While the story does wrapup, it’s clearly the first of the series. I will not be picking up the next ones.

There is a detailed bike chase at one point in the novel, taking into account groups of riders and drafting off the lead cyclist.

I was going to give the book 4 stars because it upset me. But then I realized it upset me because I was so invested in the characters and what was happening to them and that means it’s really good.
I was so angry about what the dad/sister did that I had to put the book down for a bit.
Only really good writing can get me feeling upset about fictional characters.

I have to admit that I really, truly enjoyed this one!

I know a lot of people complained that it read like fanfic, but some fanfics I've read are better than tons of published fiction I've read, so that's no concern for me. This story blends mystery and social concerns with romance in a cool fantasy environment, one filled with witches and with vaguely steampunk vibes. I'm excited to continue the series (which, by the looks of it, is more of a companion-style but I'm excited about it!) and see what comes next.
