Once I realize the book was told in third person I should have put it down. Pretty clinical storytelling and I felt no emotions over anything that happened.

This was such an interesting book. I liked the setting in 18th century Scotland, it made everything much more whimsical. The medical story line was also really compelling to me but it might be a bit gruesome to others.
However, I hated the plot twist at the end and I wish there would've been another explanation or another way to resolve all this in the end.
It added an unnecessary fantastical element to an otherwise non-fantastical book that I did not like.

I'm writing this review after some time has passed and at this point in time I'm not sure whether I will continue with the sequel as I fear it might not hold up to the first one.

Just by reading the book's blurb, it reminded me a lot of Stalking Jack the Ripper. I enjoyed that series, so I thought I would enjoy this one as much. Did I? In a word, yeah. I loved Hazel Sinnett and her passion for surgery, Jack Currer and his challenging life as a resurrection man, and just the two of them as a couple.

They had so much potential together, and sadly, I felt like the ending just robbed me of that. It all felt too abrupt that
Spoiler Jack 'died' from the hanging. Like I know it was him who sent Hazel the letter from the epilogue
and I NEED ANSWERS!

“My heart is yours, Hazel Sinnett," Jack said. "Forever. Beating or still.”

LIKE EXCUSE ME??? This is one of the best lines I've ever read! What's gonna happen to Hazel now? What the hell's gonna happen to Jack?! I NEED CLOSURE!

All in all, this was a 3.5 star read rounded to 4 stars. It was short and sweet but could've been something more. Hopefully by the end of the sequel, Hazel and Jack finally get the closure that they deserve.

this was a quick read for me! I enjoyed the medical aspect of it personally, but if you can't handle descriptive operations or things dealing with surgery DO NOT READ THIS. I repeat, DO NOT READ THIS. There is a plot twist at the end that I was not expecting at all. Schwartz found the perfect balance of historical fiction and romance! Can't wait to read the second one!

TRIGGER WARNINGS:
- cheating
- kissing
