Notes from Underground was absolutely incredible, I flew through it and I annotated so much I truly felt like my mind had been scraped out and rearranged into words on the page!
Boy, oh boy, was this certainly painful to read. Not only was the constant contradictory ideology the main character kept switching about hard to read, but the amount of second hand embarrassment I went through was unbearable. (Or was that just me?)
Nevertheless, it reminded me a lot of Albert Camus's ,[b:The Stranger|49552|The Stranger|Albert Camus|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1325739901s/49552.jpg|3324344]. The character is obviously very conflicted and at times the reader might experience that loss at well. Either you love this character for his, ahem, uniqueness. Or, to place it mildly, you just want to punch him in the face. This man wanted not chance at happiness or having a normal life! Every opportunity he got, it was shunned away.
Overall, it was a very interesting read. Certainly got better as the events about his life unfolded. I'm just, personally, very sore about the whole event with Liza. You'll see why... Certainly not my type of read, and will not read it again (the character frustrates me too much). However, the social commentary he was able to provide over the set time period, the life, and type of people was what held me the most. And Liza will always hold a special place in my heart.
Good read if you are looking for a very different and interesting one. :)
