I've gotta go with only four stars- I thoroughly enjoyed Notes from Underground but The Double dragged, which is a shame because I really want to like Dostoevsky. My previous experience with him was Crime and Punishment which I DNF'd. Personally I felt Notes flowed better than The Double; I got lost multiple times and found myself re-reading a lot compared to Notes, which I finished in a day.

I'd be happy to give Dostoevsky another go someday. On some level I wonder how much the translators come into play?

4.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Notes from Underground ★★★★★ 5
The Double ★★★★ 4.5

The disparity of our ages and life experiences (heroes') was not really a problem I faced reading this book. The double is great but Notes from Underground simply has greater and clearer impact on me.
I recommend reading Notes from Underground (my copy has The Double in it) it has bits that's humorous to me and its not as demanding as The Double. I had to reread a few chapters of The Double becuz sudden details and events unfolded in later chapters i.e. Clara Olsufyevna that I didn't notice in the beginning. The Double's end saves it.

Would I have read Notes from Underground if it weren't for a buddy read with some nice people? Debatable, I'm not gonna lie.
But I'm so glad I did! This reminded me of [b:No Longer Human|194746|No Longer Human|Osamu Dazai|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1422638843l/194746._SY75_.jpg|188338] and [b:The Metamorphosis|485894|The Metamorphosis|Franz Kafka|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1359061917l/485894._SY75_.jpg|2373750]; this questionable protagonist being a shut out from society, writing his own life down and evalutating his own actions. Ultimately also making the reader relate to parts of it so they have to ask themselves: what kind of person does that make me if I know this story is about obscure outsiders to society? Just absolutely *chef's kiss*
