wow wow wow art was stunning

Perfect blend of queer love story with sci-fi world building. It truly made me want to play the weird flying fish game. Beautiful art, pacing was a tad funky though.

Read this gorgeous book in one heady sitting. It’s truly a feat that a book so long can draw you in so completely, make you care so much about its characters, and weave together timelines and histories so intricately. There’s a slow burn to its plot and how all the threads come together, but when they do, it’s very satisfying. I loved Mia’s journey throughout the story — how she finds her purpose and voice, and comes into what she wants. We see her grow from a feisty and temperamental student to a fearless searcher and leader.

The world of this graphic novel is gorgeously rendered by Walden’s art. I find her skill is most apparent in these landscapes and cityscapes. While the writing of the characters truly brings them to life, their design sometimes left something to be desired for me. She gives the reader just enough context and history to build the world without ever feeling like she’s dumping info on you (there is a teaching scene to give the history of The Staircase, but I think she gets a pass on that one).

The world and story gave me Saga vibes, but was also completely original. All at once humorous and heartbreaking and very queer! Would highly recommend to any lover of graphic novels.

*dnf at page 108* Could not get into this book. Maybe it was the confusing setting, maybe it was the fact this is sci-fi and I’m not a fan of sci-fi. Who knows.

Loved the depth of character and panel work.
