I came to this hoping it would increase my appreciation for Mark Twain, but it turns out I was maxed out already, despite my ambivalence towards him.

Ron Chernow is a great author. This is the second of his book that I've read that has changed my view of it's subject. When I first read Alexander Hamilton, almost two decades ago, I went into it thinking Hamilton was a egomaniac and an all-around ass. He ended up being a fascinating man & a very important part of our history.
The opposite can be said of this book. I went into this with an admiration for Twain. Note that I've only read 1 of his books, in middle school - I believe. Now I have a less than flattering opinion of him. After reading Chernow's biography, Twian has become an infuriating figure. Aloof & impulsive - especially in business, funny & biting, cynical & sensitive, humble & arrogant, giving & selfish, independent minded & emotionally insecure, also possibly a pervert. While I do agree with most of his politics, especially views on social justice, his treatment of his daughters was cold, absent & indifferent.
Fitting that this man was known by 2 names considering he was so contradicting.
As with all of his books, Chernow's mastery of the subject is present in Mark Twain.

good. Love Mark Twain! Some was familiar from other biographies but there was significant new perspective. This was long, and sometimes a bit repetitive. But good read!
