This was like 5 stars for the research and writing, 3 stars for how much I actually enjoyed it. Very impressed with anyone who tackles a Twain biography and is able to wrangle the truth out of all his tall tales, and this was just incredibly well-done. Chernow manages to show Mark Twain at his best while also not romanticizing any of his lesser behaviors - like when his racism shows out or the whole problematic Aquarium Club with teenage girls. It’s a LOT of Twain, but just so, so well-done.

DID NOT FINISH: 32%

I was listening to the audiobook. It is 45 hours long. It was super tedious and it lost interest.

Deeply researched and rendered; this tells a story of greater sadness than I expected.

Absolutely massive, somewhat exhausting to read. Less interested in Twain's actual literary works than in his long semi-retirement, which he seems to have used to make his daughters miserable and to attach himself to teenage girls who provided the uncritical adulation he craved. I will never forgive him for throwing away his wife's nest egg on a series of get-rich-quick schemes.
