I will ride or die for these characters, they did what the needed to do for survival and that’s that.
Also spoilers
There spouses being alive and also being absolute dickheads was more of a twist then I was expecting

hmm.

interesting. very interesting. can't say I've read a book like this before so it's definitely a first.

some things i loved:
-this is maybe (certainly) a low bar to have but ledger's pov in their time in the cell was okay to read. he wasn't disrespectful or a jerk, in fact he was sweet, even.
-Hayes' writing, i guess? It's a little different than the ones i usually go for, or prefer but it got the story across pretty well which was a nice surprise.
-the last line.
GOD. this really sums up their relationship and i am HERE. FOR. IT.
Here goes...

"With affection and devotion and hunger, I hand my heart over. Because more than she is mine, I am hers."

BEAUTIFUL. BRAVO. EXCELLENT.

straight relationships where the boy is disgustingly infatuated with the girl make the BEST books, fight me.
examples: aaron warner from the shatter me series, this dude, elliot from love and other words.

I'm correct and you kNow it.

I wanted to read this as it had a similar vibe to Still Beating by Jennifer Hartmann (my top read of the year). Unfortunately, it was less that it had the same vibe and more that it was clear Mindy Hayes read that book and then tried to kind of copy it while adding in enough little differences to not get called out for it. But some parts were almost word for word at times. Not to mention she also took an Elyse Meyers viral TikTok storytime and added it in here too. Just overall disappointing and got too crazy at the end to even be considered good. Skip this, read Still Beating by Jennifer Hartmann.

As much as I enjoyed this
I was sooo upset by the inclusion of and handling of Ashton's betrayal of Maeve with HER SISTER! It felt so unrealistic and was just so completely unforgivable that it minimized the conflict of having your loving spouse back and dealing with having formed feelings for someone else under extreme circumstances. This had such potential but was completely undermined. I was so mad at Ashton (not to mention Elva, like, how do you not have a 'brother/sister' relationship with your brother in law of 6+ years??? So messed up! And you're supposedly so close with your sister! She was also acting like she wished her sister did not come back which was on another level - Ashton at the very least acted as you should when a loved one is rescued after major trauma) that I honestly didn't believe the struggle Maeve went through 'choosing' between him and Ledger.  And of course even though there is an HEA, Maeve basically gives Ashton and Elva her blessing, saying they made more sense together anyways, which *eyeroll*. We don't see them interact at all so this plot point felt like such an easy out to me. Becca being involved in the kidnapping also annoyed me for similar reasons - like at least make me a little bit conflicted for rooting for what is basically infidelity please!!

Other than that, I found this quite deep and emotional - for a thriller, its quite low on action, but that doesn't mean you don't feel tense all the same. I really felt Maeve & Ledger's pain, as well as their growing love for one another. Now that at least, was very believable.
