This book didn't pick up (so to speak) for me until the middle. Until then, Anita was a young girl with young girl thoughts (boys, the horror of getting a period) and a curious mind. She lives with her parents and two siblings (and older brother and sister). She is the youngest of the three.
Things to start to change a little when Anita's cousin is yanked out of school. Her cousins and aunt subsequently head to NYC. Another, young uncle has been missing for a bit. Anita's mind starts to swirl with everything that she's not being told.
SIM (The secret police) pay a visit, coded conversations, her uncle isn't missing after all... But hiding. Trujillo isn't as she thought he was...
Things take a horrible turn when her father and uncle are captured by SIM. Forcing her and her mother to go into hiding.
Her sister has already left to go to the states after becoming an object of Trujillo's affection and her brother remained safe and hidden himself. The end did a number on my feelings.
I have other thoughts and feelings about Chucha, etc.
This would probably be a good enough read for grades 6-8. 3.5 stars

i would say 3.5 stars. i like the idea of the book, it is typically not something i would read! however because it is from the perspective of a pre-teen, it makes the book a little more scattered. the overall plot was thorough and the end of the book was led to prior - so there was not too much surprise toward the end. i enjoyed the book otherwise :)
