I was supposed to read this for school, but I didn't. It happened to be sitting next to my bed the other night when I wanted something to read. I like it so far, though I wish I knew more about the Dominican Republic in the 60's.

Life under a dictatorship from a 12-year-old's perspective. I actually listened to this book on tape. Read by the author, she brings the language and story alive. I'm not so sure I would have read it through on my own but books on tape are kind of new to me so hard to say. Good historical fiction. Alvarez left the Dominican Republic in 1960 during the dictatorship. She wrote this story to imagine what it would have been like to have stayed. Rotten way to grow up.
I thought this was an excellent book to be taught in middle schools. It's a good introduction to the historical fiction genre. I didn't really appreciate all the translations but that was a personal thing.
