Reading like a narrative nonfiction, this book explores the life of a doctor in emergency medicine while also confronted with different social issues such as race, abuse, mental illness, and women’s rights. It was a great read to gain more insight on how these issues impact our country—even our medical care systems. Overall an insightful read!

This was a great memoir! I loved a medicine-focused memoir that's approachable to readers outside of medicine, and this book was certainly that! It follows Dr. Michele Harper, whose an ER doctor in New York and then (in this book primarily) in Philadelphia. Each chapter follows an influential patient, as Harper includes anecdotes about her personal evolution after a surprising divorce and opinions about the state of medicine/society at large. I loved the range of ER experiences/people included in this book and found Harper's writing enjoyable to read. This was the perfect book to come in and out of while I've been finishing up my last semester of college!

I liked how Dr. Harper wove stories from the ER into life lessons. She seems like a really great holistic doctor.
From the title of the book I expected more of the story to revolve around her breaking. However, only the very beginning of the book did (her abusive father and divorce) and the rest of the book was stories from the ER.

5/10 - kid you not, one freaking year later, i finally finished this book, it was well written & the stories in the book were heart warming & taught you things about yourself you didn’t know & also taught you things you didn’t know you needed to know, each chapter was written about a different patient she encountered and what they taught her, it’s just really not the type of book i go for but hey it was great if you vibe with it, but also i never had the motivation to read it

I really loved this memoir. So beautifully written with a sense of peace and forgiveness woven throughout. This book illustrates the inherent racism and sexism that is so deeply rooted in the healthcare system, with Michele’s own personal and familial trauma shaping how she comes to practice medicine.

Would read this again and again.
