Major advancements in the overarching series plot. The romance story was also enjoyable, although its pacing was sacrificed a bit in service to the larger plot. I got a wee bit tired of hearing Ivan bemoan what a monster his unique gift made him when, as a reader, it was so clear it would be a magnificent advantage rather than a threat. However, the pacing weirdness was more than worth it for the big payoff at the end.
