Easy to read, great pace, natural dialog, mystery after mystery. This boook to me read like a novel, as all the stories flowed together well, and yet each story stood alone well too. My first Mosley book, but not my last.

Good stories, fun crimes to watch Easy Rawlins solve. Unfortunately the poor depiction of women hampered my enjoyment.

Six Easy Pieces is a composite novel, a term to define a collection of short stories that are connected to each other. I learned that from my English professor, who assigned us to read this wonderful composite novel by Walter Mosley. It tells the story of Easy Rawlins, an African-American janitor slash private investigator who lives in the 1960s. Six Easy Pieces is the 8th Easy Rawlins book by Mosley, but despite never have read any of Easy's previous adventures, I followed his life journey in this book just fine.

Six Easy Pieces finds Easy Rawlins after the death of his best friend, Mouse. He works as a head janitor at the Sojourned Truth Middle School and is determined to live a peaceful live with his two adopted children, Feather and Jesus, and his beautiful fiancee, Bonnie. But his past soon catches up with him, and Easy becomes entangled with bombers, murderers, thieves, and smugglers. While Easy tries his best to keep a balance between his two very different lives, a very important question ensues: is Mouse really dead, or is he still alive somehow? Easy won't rest until he figures out the truth.

Overall, Six Easy Pieces is quite an entertaining and interesting book. It is my first introduction to Easy Rawlins, and by the middle of the first story I have already liked his character. Easy is a very charming and intelligent man with high moral values; he is a character one could simply deduct as "a good man." He is hardworking, honest, and loyal to his loved ones, and it impresses me how he often deals with complicated and dangerous situations in his life with wit and elegance.

Aside from Easy's likable character, the seven stories in this composite are also highly interesting. Each story has its own personal appeal; some are about murders and deceit, some about theft and fraud, and some about missing people and kidnappings. Each story's villain comes from all sorts of socioeconomic and racial backgrounds; often, the culprits are one I suspected the least. Each story has its own twists and turns, and they managed to keep me hooked. They are very much well-written, rightfully-paced, and well thought-of.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would, and I would very much like to read the other Easy Rawlins stories in the near future. He sure is one hell of a character!

3.5 Perhaps I should not have jumped in on this series here. I liked it enough to want to read another one, but I'm not itching to do so right away.

These 7 Easy Rawlins short stories are all good and entertaining but I think the novel is where he shines best. I also resent a really big reveal about a favorite character is in one of these stories when it should have been a bigger plot point. Still a quick fun read though.

As a writer, I’ve been interested in reading more short story collections. I dove into Six East Pieces right after Bad Boy Brawly  Brown, so  imagine my surprise when I realized it’s written as a short story cycle! This went down smooth, I love the pacing, and the way you get 6 separate yet interlinked Easy cases all in one. The last one definitely packs a punch.

Now that was a good book of short stories. A perfect amount of go between from Bad Boy Brawly Brown to Little Scarlet.
