I love how the Peter S Beagle writes. Period. How he describes things and personifies objects is remarkable and vibrant. He does not overly describe items and he does not under describe them either. Decent character development, I definitely wanted more as well as more backstory on certain characters as well. The book could have been a bit longer as well. I enjoyed the urgency of altruism too from certain characters. This felt like a simple LOTR story, and that's a good thing. It was very nice overall and I really liked it!

The fairy tale of the fairy tales. The characters have to live up to their own archetype, and suddenly, being the Hero, the Magician or the Damsel in distress looks like a doomed destiny. Loved the Cat, the Skull and Schmendrick !

I was obsessed with this book when I was younger. It started with the movie (which we only bought on a whim because my mom loved unicorns so much). Then the soundtrack. Then my boyfriend at the time bought me the book and I fell in love (with the book, not the boy). I've read it so many times it's almost falling apart. It's not the movie, of course, but it's a beautiful, heart breaking story all the same.

I appreciate the writing and complexity underlying this seemingly simple, but I have to admit that I was not a huge fan. I thought it was a good book, but it was a little too bittersweet for me at this moment, though I really did love the characters.
