I really wanted to love this book. I thought it was objectively well-written, with absolutely gorgeous prose and a charming and whimsical atmosphere. I liked the character of Schemdrick. 

But I can't lie, despite that overall I  just wasn't very gripped by it. I felt like at any point I could have just stopped reading it and not had the urge to read on. It just didn't resonate with me.

I don't really know why as I can't pinpoint what exactly I didn't like? I've not seen the movie and I didn't read the book as a kid so it's not something I have any nostalgia for. But sometimes things just don't click for you and that's okay.

There are three books I know I will read to my children someday: the Hobbit, the Princess Bride, and the Last Unicorn. 

You can read into this story whatever you want: depression, mortality, love, greed, fairy tales, envy. In the end, it's a story, as good and as bad as any other.
