I loved this book by Jillian Cantor. It follows Margot Frank, Anne Frank's sister, after she escapes her concentration camp and settles in the US. Of course, this is all speculation as there is no proof that Margot in fact did survive. Nevertheless, a great story about blending in to American life and keeping the secret about having a "famous" sister.

I'm normally not the person in book club that doesn't finish the book, but Margot caused me to become just that.

I could probably also blame it on distractions like buying and selling houses, starting to read another book and vacation, but even after cranking through 50% of the book in a single day (quick read) I still can't bring myself to finish.

Reading the synopsis initially I was interested; but after getting only 30% in, I was already disappointed. What I'd hoped would be intriguing seemed ultimately trivialized into a twilight-typecast love story that read more like the thoughts of a teenager than of a woman and survivor.

The writing style seemed overly simplistic and repetitive (i.e. paper walls) whereas the actual story on which this novel was based is so much more powerful and emotional.

Skip it. Read some nonfiction instead.

I'm surprised how much I liked this book. I know that's an odd thing to say, but the concept is strange, to say the least. Being Jewish, I wasn't sure how an author could handle this kind of topic as an alternate history. It was done well, with very good writing. The way she handles the first-person perspective is also really well done. The story isn't all that remarkable except when put into the context of who it's about. That juxtaposition of the average with a mythic person is very interesting.

This was a quick and engaging read. I really enjoyed Margot's character and inner voice but the rest of the characters and the plot were two-dimensional.

Interesting "What If" Anne Franke's sister survived the war, but no one knew it story. It's been way too long since I've read the Diary, so I have no insight as to how true to the real people the author stayed, but according to her notes at the end, sounds like she did a fairly good job.
