Definitely my favorite read of August, and maybe of the year! I listened to this book during work, and boy does it grab your attention. I made so may bookmarks in my audiobook. I might just grab a physical copy from the bookstore to make those notes physical and have for future reference.

The content is easily digestible by the average person. You do not need to know much anything about psychology to understand it, but it would give you a bit more understanding. There is no particular target audience, I would say. Maybe those who want to learn more about themselves and the human mind and emotions.

A genuinely life-changing and perspective-altering read; a guidebook to constantly refer back to and continue to learn more from. Brené Brown gave me so many “ah huh!” moments throughout this book that I lost count. Ultimately I have a greater understanding of myself, how my language and the language of those around me has impacted us, and the importance of human connection.

I suggest readers have highlighters and pens at the ready.

The audiobook is read by Brené Brown herself, with relevant diagrams attached as PDFs. Brown also rereads sections and adds detail to assist the listener to get the same connection to the content as they would when reading the physical book.
I chose to listen to the book and go back to read over my physical copy after each section; I highly recommend this method as it consolidated my thinking.

I understood that people would do almost anything to not feel pain, including causing pain and abusing power, and I understood that there were very few people who could handle being held accountable for causing hurt without rationalising, blaming, or shutting down. (p.xvii)

I also learned that when you hold someone accountable for hurtful behaviours and they feel shame, that’s not the same as shaming someone. I am responsible for holding you accountable in a respectful and productive way. I’m not responsible for your emotional reaction to that accountability. (p.xix)

Ludwig Wittgenstein: “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world” (p.xxi)

Any belonging that asks us to betray ourselves is not true belonging. (p.155)

Connection is the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgement; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship. (p.255)

Don’t look away. Don’t look down.
Don’t pretend not to see hurt.
Look people in the eye.
Even when their pain is overwhelming.
And when you’re hurting and in pain, find the people who can look you in the eye. (pp.271-272)

While written in a style that is easy to read, great for picking up and referencing, it will make you think about yourself...whether you wish to or not.
