Definitely my favorite read of August, and maybe of the year! I listened to this book during work, and boy does it grab your attention. I made so may bookmarks in my audiobook. I might just grab a physical copy from the bookstore to make those notes physical and have for future reference.

The content is easily digestible by the average person. You do not need to know much anything about psychology to understand it, but it would give you a bit more understanding. There is no particular target audience, I would say. Maybe those who want to learn more about themselves and the human mind and emotions.

It's a giant nope from me.

What I Liked:
-The concept of near-enemies
-A select few of the definitions (Rumination being a fav)

What I Disliked:
-The over-simplification of everything but especially the political aspects
-This is my first Brené Brown book so the constant references to her other books came across as a money grab. While I can understand it can be a reference point for her loyal readers I don't like that I would have been paying for this book for it to tell me to go buy her other books to have a better understanding of what she was saying in Atlas of the Heart.

What Angered Me to the Point That I Lost Sleep
-With the emotion of humiliation the author distastefully incorporates school shootings. Using a study that examines school shootings from 1996-1999 "In every case the shooters described...events that led to profound humiliation" "Individuals who are bullied become violent specifically when feelings of humiliation accompany the bullying "...Humiliation is often an attack against a social identity (ethnicity, race, sexual orientation) it doesn't add up to what we statistically know about school shooters in the U.S are predominantly male or white or that it's a primarily a horrible American phenomenon. Women and non-binary experience humiliation, humiliation is something people face globally, so using this example was over-simplified, in poor taste and not a universal experience.

For those who benefitted from the emotion definitions, I'm glad you didn't waste your 40$. Personally, I did not find Atlas of the Heart to be that informative and the lack of substance to the reference of school shootings sickened me. I will not be recommending this book to anyone.
