A beautiful and heartbreaking story about real life events that took place in the 1950s. Based off of Charlene's life, the story is about Regina and her family's life once the government decides they aren't "Indians" anymore. They are relocated to Los Angeles and taken from the life they built in Oregon. (It is said that Indian is used in the book as it was the term given to Native people.)

Told from Regina's POV, the story shows how life is before and after the government makes you change who you are. Regina is questioning her life and what it means to be Indian. This story also deals with racism in the 1950s against anyone who isn't white.

I found this book a great coming of age story for children to read. It is good for older elementary and older as some of the language and themes may be too hard for younger children to understand.

I’ve never read a book that was started by one author who passed during the process of writing it and then finished by another. But now that I have, I can’t help but wonder if the author would have enjoyed what became of her book. All I do know, though, is that I enjoyed it. Native American history pass The Trail of Tears is not taught enough in schools. There need to be more books like this to educate those who are oblivious to blatant racism in the US.
