I have to state that I adore Joshilyn Jackson but this was not my favorite of her novels. I definitely didn't dislike it! I just wouldn't gush over it. You go through the majority of the book with the protagonist telling you one view of events that happened 15-20 years ago, but you know that is not how it went down. She keeps you guessing until the very end, and I'll admit I was surprised.
The protagonist is likable, but occasionally irritating. I am no prude at all but was uncomfortable with some of her actions in high school, I didn't get enough from her love interest. His main feature was that he was black. I had to be reminded that he was a lawyer. He's more of a prop for the story.
The aunt (Florence? Fran?) is a great character! I would love a book around her, maybe even going back through her life.
I enjoyed the period aspects of the book.

and I can't entirely take her off the hook for what she thought she did. (It could have gone the way she envisioned.)The aunt (Florence? Fran?) is a great character! I would love a book around her, maybe even going back through her life.

This is the third Joshilyn Jackson book I have read and she is fast becoming a favorite.
I just really like this book. It was a fast fun read even though the subject matter was actually rather dark and serious. I loved the characters, they were smart, quirky and funny. The way the story unfolds was refreshing.
I absolutely love this book. I could read it over and over again! From the setting and storyline to the characters, Joshilyn Jackson will capture your heart with Gods in Alabama!
I really enjoyed this book. There were some great twists at the end of the book that i did not see coming. I liked the main character Arlene/Lena. And I really liked her fella, Bur. He kept her grounded and sensible. I loved the relationship between the women in this book as well. Very well written. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because I listened to the audiobook and there was music randomly in places and I absolutely cannot stand when this is done in an audiobook. The book did not need that. It took away from the story for me.
Joshilyn Jackson was recommended to me during a brief e-mail exchange with another Bookmoocher, after we got into a "yay Southern lit!" convo.
"Gods in Alabama" involves kind of a reverse mystery, with the solution coming before the whole motivation thing. It was interesting enough to keep me reading throughout the long weekend, with characters who were likeable most of the time.
I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected to; maybe I've hit my limit of unstable characters and dead parents and need to read something 100% fluffy. But I did like it, even if I didn't LOVE it, and I'll definitely be trying something else by Jackson.

Fabulous novel by one of my new favourite authors. I really enjoyed this compact and intriguing story. Such a great span of characters - two strong female leads and past deeds coming home to roost. Excellent, I am looking forward to my next book by J. Jackson.
Oh my, this is one of the worst books I’ve ever read. Hated it! Can’t believe I finished it, should have given it up.
4 for the mystery
2 for the main character... thank goodness for Burr
